WU 1.5 miles

Ran 5K @ 6:58” pace (PR). It was a very tough challenging run.

I had all the reasons not to do it today: It was my lunch break; right knee was tender during warm up; 4 days off during the holidays; tomorrow is our weekly quality work out; 20 miles run at 8:00” pace this coming Sunday; last but not least the thought of running 3.1 miles under 7:00” pace seems SO intimidating (7:00” pace is my 1 mile repeats pace).

After 1.5 miles warm up, I took a short break, drank some water, did some serious soul searching and decided to do it.

It was a tough run even during the first mile. And it was getting harder as the run progressed. The legs were up to the task but not the heart and mind. Toward the end of mile two, I was breathing pretty hard and really wanted to stop. It was my pride that kept me going and finally finished.

At the end of the run, I felt like I could hold on to another lap at this pace if it was to qualify me for Boston. Mentally, that was all that I can take!

Time predictor said to run a 3:30:00” marathon I will need to run 5K @ 6:55” pace and 10K @ 7:12” pace. Will try it before Feb. 18, 2007.

Tam - you are within range. Note that you can never run a 5 K on your own as fast as you would in a race. I'd say do not worry too much about hitting goal pace in tempos. Just go out and train, put in the miles, and when the race day comes take what it will give you. Worrying about the race can only make things worse.

On race day start out at 7:55-8:00 pace and hold it for a while. If you get to 18 and it starts feeling way too slow, start pushing. If you get there and you cannot hold it, just run to survive. See if you can still get a big PR. There will be another day for BQ.

A marathon is a very unpredictable distance, very susceptible to random influences. A mild cold you would not have otherwise noticed, a mild indigestion, a bit too much anxiety, and you run 4-5 minutes or more slower than your potential on race day. So you usually have to try more than once to reach it.

Right now after a few months of good training you are walking on the verge of BQ. However, give yourself a couple of years of solid training, and you will be very well over it. So in this one, take a BQ if your body will give it, but also have a plan for solid training in the future.

T=46 degrees, gray sky, windy, cold, and raining. Was thinking of going to YMCA for an easy run but could not bear the guilt so I ended up joining our group.

Warm up & Drills 1.5 miles. Cool down 1 mile.

Knee OK after a slow warm up and drills.

The rain and wind finally stopped; there was light on the track; and the cool temperature suddenly made it a very pleasant day to run.

Ran MGP, 10K pace, 5K pace at about 7:40”, 7:20”, 7:00” pace with Joe and Scott, mostly at conversational/medium effort. Felt great. Good recovery from yesterday’s 5K run.

Good job on the tempo run.

I noticed you've been skipping days and cutting down the mileage. It is not the time to do it yet. Do not skip days. cut the mileage with two weeks to go.

From Tam Hoang on Sat, Jan 13, 2007 at 12:28:50

Thanks Sasha. Still very upset about my horrible 20 miles race this last Sunday. First bad race of the year, unfortunately it is the most important race beside the Marathon. There was nothing that I could do differently to prepare for that race nor anything I could do to prevent a side stich. And that really bothers me. I will try to stay focus in my training for the next couple weeks. Have not totally lost my faith in my training and my Marathon goal but my confidence certainly is shaken.

Thanks again.

Good work. A bit too long, but still an indicator of fitness. I believe you would have PRed in the marathon had you run another 3.22 miles. The Boston Qualifier is starting to look more feasible. Not totally in the bag, but close. I'd say if everything goes right you'll get it. Find the 3:30 pacer group and run with them to 20. After that, hopefuly you'll be able to take off, but if not, still hang in there to get a solid PR.

Make sure to eat to the best of your dietary knowledge and understanding of your body between now and the race time (and hopefully not stop after the race). Do not do anything unwise or risky. Make sure to get plenty of sleep. Avoid stress as much as possible - adrenaline releases glycogen and you want to store it instead.

How is the knee doing?

From Tam Hoang on Mon, Jan 29, 2007 at 14:33:42

I tore my right knee ACL 12 years ago doing Karate and soccer. Since I waited 2 years to get it fixed, the doctor removed most of my right knee’s damaged cartilage, smooth out the bone surfaces before reconstructing my ACL. He also said I should not run the marathon. Lately it has been sore a bit due to the combination of more mileage, hill, and speed work. I am trying to be extremely careful with it and am grateful that it has been good to me so far. Thanks for asking.

T=38-40 degrees. Sunshine, calm wind. Ran in short, tank top, and gloves.

Drank 1 gallon of Gatorade on Saturday and ½ gal on Sunday morning. Took 4 GUs: 2 at starting time, 1 at mile 4th, and 1 at mile 10th.

Warm up and drills about 1 mile.

Ran 3M half marathon at 7:27” pace average (PR). First half at 7:33” pace and second half at 7:22” pace.

It’s a fast course with a lot of gradual down hills. My previous half marathon PR was set at the same course 5 years ago when I ran at 7:45” pace. It was brutal the entire run and I thought I would collapse at the end. That year I also set my marathon PR at 3:44:45”.

This year it felt differently. I ran mostly at medium-hard to controlled comfortly hard effort. The pace that I felt I could sustain without breathing too hard and going into the oxygen debt. There were a few times during the first 3 miles that I started breathing heavily due to trying to keep up with someone who was running faster than I could. I chose to let them go, slowed down, and focus on maintaining my even running effort. Without the pressure of the pace group, I walked about 10-15 yards during water stops at every 2 miles, running up hills or down hills at my preferred speed, or speed up or slow down any time that I feel like it. At mile 10, since I have a lot of energy left, I was thinking of picking up the pace but decided not to. I was so content with my pace and my effort level that I do not want to risk it. At the end I believe I could run 3 more miles at this pace/effort level. Great run. Very encouraging!!!

This 3M half marathon is a fast course and it was part of the Freescale Marathon last year. This year, however, they had changed the Marathon course from a point to point to loop course. It is now a much hillier course. Most of the hills are from mile 7th to 17th.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
26.200.000.000.0026.20

Ran 26.2 miles in 3:45' .

After the 3M 1/2 marathon which I set a PR at 7:27" pace, I know I was in shape to run a 3:30:00" marathon or close to it. Unfortunately I was not feeling great 3 days after that. The following weekend after the 3M, it took me two and a half hours to finish our 13 miles long run! I ran the first 4 miles at about 8:45” pace then really slowed down after that. At the end I was running at 15-20 minutes per miles, almost at walking speed! My running buddies said after waiting for almost an hour they were about to drive back to look for me! During that run, I felt extremely fatigue and all my joints aches. It was not painful but just moderate aching. I still do not know why other than may be I was sick, over training, or something… But normally when I got sick it must have something to do with my allergy problem like sneezing, coughing, sinus headache, or fever. I had none of those symptoms this time. The 2 1/2 weeks before the marathon I knew something was wrong when I failed to keep up with my running buddies on every single work out! The 3M half marathon was the last “good” work out that I had before the Marathon. I tried to give myself a break by running every other day and was hoping that I would recover in the next 2 weeks for the marathon but I did not. On Marathon day, I felt OK but not great. I ran the first 2 miles at 8:43" pace, almost 1 minute slower than recommended (the first mile was very hilly). On the next 8 miles the course is flat and I ran at about 8:12" pace. Physically I felt OK but somehow the “fire”, competitive spirit, and energy level were just not there. At mile 9th, I was 3 minutes behind my MGP and the hills are just begun. They are from mile 9th to 17th. I knew then it was not my day. From there on I stopped looking at my watch and just run to finish. It was mentally then physically very hard running through those 8 hilly miles with no hope (qualify for Boston). The thought of quitting, go home and come back another day did cross my mind – several times.  The course elevation finally reached its peak at mile 17th. Still 9 more miles to go! At that point I was getting tired and I started taking a 20-30 yards walk break at water stops. The last 5 miles was hard but they are not as hard as some other work out that I had done in training. I was able to run the last 5 miles without taking a walk break, passed many people, and felt very good about it.

Somehow I did not feel too much disappointed about my 3:45:00 result because down deep inside I know I could have done better. My running buddy finished in 3:37’ which I think is fair given the difficulty of the course. I will have to come back and try it another time (=:

Almost a PR. Can you post the details of the race so we can see what happened? From that, make a plan to try for BQ one more time.

From Maria on Fri, Feb 23, 2007 at 13:12:16

The course was a killer. They changed the course this year, from one of the fastest, to one of the slowest. If previous PR was run on the old course, then this is certainly an improvement and PR-equivalent. I watched the webcast from Austin for some time last weekend, and commentators were standing at 10 mile mark and it was HILLY there. They said there is a 2 mile uphill stretch, just in that area, and I don't know how many hills there were on the entire course.

So, good job Tam, even if the time isn't what you hoped for!

From Paul on Mon, Feb 26, 2007 at 22:59:23

Tam, great summary of your experience. Learn from it and adjust next year.

From Maria on Tue, Feb 27, 2007 at 08:24:30

Wow, it appears something went very wrong after your half marathon! One thing you may want to consider for your next marathon, is to run a tune-up half a little bit further away from marathon day. You ran your half 3 weeks before - I think it's a bit too close, 4 or 5 weeks away would work better. Also, the next day after the half, you felt good and ran 3x1000m at 5K pace with short recovery - that's way too much. Half marathon takes a lot out of you and you probably should have just run very easy for at least 2 days after. Then, on Wed. after the half you ran 12x300m again with short recovery, but you were beginning to feel tired already. Still, your meltdown was very dramatic. I wonder if you got low on iron or got some sort of rheumatic infection (hence aching joints). That was a very disturbing sign that it took you 2:30 to finish 13 miles. So you obviously didn't recover enough to run a strong marathon, but you should be proud of your effort under these circumstances! It's very hard to continue runnning knowing you're not going to hit your goal.

Also, try to pick a flatter marathon next time - it's hard enough to BQ without hills, so give yourself some help there :). Maybe Houston?

From Tam Hoang on Tue, Feb 27, 2007 at 09:18:33

Thanks Maria. I do appreciate your comments.

TAM!!!

Come back dude!

Where are yah?

I enjoyed reading about your Marathon even though I was there with you. I am not sure if you told me about your 3M results, congrats on that for sure. I really felt like this new course was a lot more difficult than the last one. Even with the "improvements" I'd love to run Austin again but without a course revert it's just not worth the airfare. I think I got a 3:40. I was pretty satisfied with that considering the amount of training I had, or had not been, doing.

Come on back to the blog here and start leaving me some more motivational comments. I miss running with you and Paul and the rest of the group. You guys kept me motivated and kept me pushing myself.

I wanna run town lake and wilco and the high school track. I miss all that stuff.
